Position Summary

Under the direction of tenants who live within independent apartments at 1010 Sinclair Street, one of the four Fokus Housing units, the Westwood Cluster unit, or the Watson Cluster unit, the primary responsibility of this position is to provide tenants with personal assistance, meal preparation, and housekeeping. This will be done in accordance with the Independent Living Philosophy.

Fokus attendants will work under the general policies and procedures established by the tenants who live within the Fokus Housing system. These general policies and procedures will be established by individual Fokus units and/or the Fokus Council.


Detailed Position Responsibilities

All responsibilities are carried out under the direction of the tenant.

  1. To provide assistance with personal care activities such as dressing, bathing, grooming, etc..

  2. To provide assistance in transferring in the safest way possible for the tenant and the attendant, dressing, and all aspects of personal grooming.

  3. To provide assistance as required with bowel and bladder routines including the cleaning of urinary appliances and other special equipment.

  4. To advise tenant of any irregularities which may be health related, but due to lack of sensation or limited physical mobility, the tenant may not observe for him or herself. For example:

    • skin discoloration
    • abrasions
    • urinary odor
    • and other observed changes

  5. To provide assistance with passive range of motion exercises and with other supports to maximize the abilities of an individual as required.

  6. To provide ventilator assistance i.e.- change dressing, circuit changes, suctioning, cleaning of equipment, following direction in case of emergency, etc.

  7. To provide assistance in meal preparation, use and care of cooking equipment, feeding assistance, clean up and storage of dishes and food.

  8. To provide assistance with housekeeping services as required in order to maintain a clean living environment.

  9. To work cooperatively with the direct supervisor and or any other support staff to ensure the smooth running of the services to tenants and to enable open communication with all parties within the guidelines of the unit.

  10. To provide other duties as assigned.

Performance Indicators:

  1. Maintains a positive working relationship with tenants:

    • willingly accepts direction from tenants
    • maintains confidentiality
    • responds promptly to duties or when paged
    • is cordial and respectful at all times
    • treats possessions of the tenants with care

  2. Works with Attendant Supervisor in a constructive manner to maintain excellent service delivery.

    • arrives for duty on time
    • notifies supervisor within specified period when they are unable to work
    • is prepared to assist in the orientation of new staff members
    • is familiar with the personnel manual -attends staff meetings and in-service training
    • follows the unit procedures of each individual unit

  3. Demonstrates effort to improve skills.

  4. Maintains excellent work habits and attendance record.

  5. Performs responsibilities in accordance with the Collective Agreement and Ten Ten Sinclair's Personnel Policy.

Required Qualifications for Position:

  1. The ability to accept responsibility, show good judgment and initiative, and work with a minimum of supervision.

  2. The ability to work closely with others in a courteous and respectful manner, and maintain good communication with tenants and other staff.

  3. Must be physically fit and physically capable of performing the essential duties of the job.

  4. Ability to work in apartments with tenants who may smoke and who may have pets and who may wear scented products.

  5. Must be able to follow verbal instructions.

  6. Must be able to maintain confidentiality, in respect to the privacy of individuals with disabilities while carrying out the duties of the position.

  7. Flexibility to provide coverage for shifts.

  8. Must complete a criminal records check.
